Apps this Week for Android, Apple and Blackberry
1. Résumé Builder for Android: The Résumé Builder app can be downloaded to an Android device once purchased and used to create simple résumés. The application has the general outline and draft for résumés, which generates a Word document (DocX) file that can be emailed to a personal email address or to a prospective employer. With the upgrade offered for editing services, users may submit created résumés for correction and tips that could help you remove common errors and information that companies look out for when denying work applications.
2. Pocket Résumé for Apple (iPhone): Pocket Résumé is similar to Résumé Builder on Android, which comes installed with the layout of a typical résumé for you to input the information you want potential employers to know about you. However, if you have a profile on LinkedIn - a business-oriented social-networking site - Pocket Résumé can easily create the résumé based on the profile. The résumé can also be saved in PDF format, shared and previewed wherever and whenever.
3. Winning Résumé for Blackberry: Although this application does not come fully equipped with drafts and résumé layouts, it takes the user through a series of lessons on the preparation of a résumé by explaining each feature of a résumé. The lessons are created by professionals in the human resource management and recruitment fields. The user can simultaneously use other documentation apps such as WordToGo to create the résumé, as Winning Résumé is used as a guided reference.

Google’s New Policies: Good for Users, Great for Android Developers and the Ecosystem
While the ‘iOS vs Android’ debate is still hot after all these years,
the facts on the ground illustrate a very clear picture of the
differences between the two ecosystems. In essence and as many people
have pointed out over the years, it is the Mac vs PC war all over again.
The results were predetermined. Android would achieve wider
distribution with tens of different manufacturers embracing the
platform. iOS would lose the market to Android but retain a very loyal
and active user-base.
iOS users surf the web more than Android users. iOS developers make more money than Android developers. The iOS App Store has tighter guidelines than Google Play and the apps increase in quality accordingly. All this was obvious from the get-go. What wasn’t obvious was Google’s latest move.
Google sent an email to all its third party developers this week explaining that the company is updating its Google Play Developer Program Policies. Remember how Android is all about openness and how anyone can do anything to your device? Yea, well it turns out, that is not always the best thing for anyone.
First of all, the entire policy now applies not only to an app
published but also to the name of the developer, any content the app
links to, or any other type of user generated content displayed or
linked to from an app. There are the obvious bans such as adult
material, violence or bullying, as well as hate speech. So far, so good.
Here is where Google made some serious changes to its rule book, changes that will have a very serious effect on dozens of companies across the Android universe. You know how some Android apps monetize by serving you ads in the notification bar? Surely you have seen this before. Yep, no longer. Banned.
But wait, it gets better. Any app downloaded from Google Play can no
longer change anything about the device outside of the app. The user can
explicitly allow this but without the user consent, it is no longer
allowed. What does this new rule include? The presentation of apps,
widgets, or settings on the device. if the user does allow this
behavior, the app must make it very clear that it was responsible for
this change and that the user can reverse it easily by deleting the app.
Apps can no longer install shortcuts or bookmarks on the user’s home screen or browser. That includes a search bar or anything else apps use to monetize outside of the app.
Oh, you thought that was it? Apps can no longer serve ads via push notifications. Woah, HUGE shift in policy!!
Other new rules in the policy change include the ban of apps that encourage users to remove other apps (battery usage etc), the removal of apps that spam including negative content, “irrelevant, misleading, or excessive keywords in apps descriptions, titles, or metadata.”, as well as developers who post fake reviews on competitors’ apps. Oh and apps that send SMS, email, or other messages on behalf of users? Yea, they are gone too!
Nope, that’s not it. You know how there are many payment solutions for in-app purchases? Yep, now “Developers offering virtual goods or currencies within a game downloaded from Google Play must use Google Play’s in-app billing service as the method of payment.” Ouch.
There are many MANY more changes in the policy but here is one more interesting one. “Ads must not simulate or impersonate the user interface of any app, or notification and warning elements of an operating system.”
So what does all this mean? It means that Google understands that while open is great, at the end of the day, users would rather have a superior experience both in terms of Google Play as a whole, and apps behavior in particular. Once these new rules come into effect (30 days before Google starts removing apps), we can expect to see an increase in Android app engagement. It might not happen overight but when users are afraid to tap something in an app, out of fear of it actually being an ad for pornographic material, that doesn’t do wonders for user engagement.
Once these new rules are live, the experience as a whole will increase accordingly, as will the engagement on the platform, and the resulting Android app developer revenue, which very much depends on user engagement.
That is what is called a Win Win. Win.

Twisty Launcher For Android Lets You Use Gestures To Launch Apps
Motorola announced the new Droid lineup as well as its flagship Moto X smartphone recently. The company touted one particular feature that exists in all of these smartphones, the ability to launch camera app through a gesture. The feature is obviously limited to Motorola’s devices, but a new app has gone live on the Google Play Store which brings a similar functionality for almost every Android device out there. The Twisty Launcher app lets users assign apps which will be automatically launched after they make a certain gesture with the device in hand. Lets be clear, Twisty isn’t exactly a conventional Android “launcher,” its not a home screen that you slap on your device. Its a standalone app which runs in the background and waits patiently to detect a gesture, upon which it launches the selected app. Twisty Launcher is available as a free download from Google Play Store, the camera app is selected by default and it offers one gesture. With the device facing towards the user, it only needs to be flicked to the left and back upright twice to launch the pre-determined app. If you want to assign any other app, you’ll have to fork up $0.99 as an in-app purchase. It would also enable two more gestures, a perpendicular flip and a “barrel roll” motion.

Mobile Weather App Minutely Lets You “Correct” The Weather, Visualize Storms In 3D
Mobile weather applications may be becoming the new playground for user interface designers, but few can also make claims as to advancing the technology behind the display of the weather on users’ smartphones, as Yes, Unity – the cross-platform video game development engine, which is rarely (if ever) used to build non-game mobile applications for smartphones. In fact, when Minutely’s co-founder and CEO Justin Re told Unity CEO David Helgason about his plans, he was told that such an idea was just “crazy.” But with the debut of Minutely’s mobile application, that crazy idea seems to have paid off.
well. But that’s the case with Minutely, a newly launched mobile weather application for iPhone and Android which not only offers the usual assortment of weather info, like temperatures, forecasts, and precipitation details, but also a 3D view into the weather itself in an application built on top of Unity.
Minutely is the new app and rebranding from a company called Ourcast, which had previously raised $1.3 million and launched a weather app by the same name back in April 2012. But Re explains that Ourcast’s problem, basically, was that it was built by engineers. “It didn’t have a very good product focus,” he admits. “It was more of a utility app.”
Ourcast was interesting, though, because it could predict the weather down to the minute, through a combination of weather data, algorithms, and crowdsourcing from the app’s network or users. But the company wanted to do more.
“We started looking at everyone [making weather apps] and what they’re trying to do,” explains Re. “And we took all the best features from the other apps – including our own – and combined it into one.”
The company also wanted to do something with a more visual element to it, but found they were restricted by the nature of the available tools for traditional app developers. That’s how the team ended up turning to Unity, which allowed them to map out not just the x and y axis of the radar data they pull in, but the z axis, too. This gives the new app Minutely its unique 3D view into storms, which will also be one of its key selling points to consumers.
However, while 3D weather maps is Minutely’s standout feature, the overall app experience is also well-designed, and definitely a step up from the company’s earlier efforts with Ourcast. The app’s homescreen features at-a-glance information including current temps, highs and lows, a 2-day forecast, an animated weather icon (e.g. sunny, overcast, heavy rain, etc.), and a chart that displays both the temperature and chance of rain over the next 24 hours. From this main screen, tapping on various elements or “view more” links will offer more details, like a written-out “full forecast” for the day, an extended forecast for the week ahead, a rain gauge, or, if you tap the weather icon, a way to report the weather yourself.
A “Waze” For Weather
This is another one of Minutely’s notable features – it’s also a crowdsourced weather application, where user reporting actually helps to inform its model. That is, if a certain number of users report data that contradicts what Minutely’s weather feeds and algorithms say, the weather report changes. (The number of people needed for that impact to occur will grow over time as the product becomes more widely adopted.)
What’s nice about Minutely’s variation on the crowdsourced weather reporting interface, as compared with a competitor like Weathermob for example, is that the interface for reporting this data is extremely simple. You just tap on the animated homescreen icon, choose a picture, then tap “report.” Weathermob instead asks users to choose three icons – a weather descriptor, sentiment, and what the weather is good for (e.g. grilling out, golfing, etc.)For those who want to submit more details with their weather reports in Minutely, they can do so via the
The 3D visualization of the precipitation is the app’s big whiz-bang feature of course, and Re says this will be improved in time. Because the app is built on Unity, they’ll be able to display the rain as droplets and the snow as flakes, and so on, to give you a better feeling of what kind of weather is happening where. It’s worth noting that the 3D element actually works better on Android, and doesn’t run well on anything below an iPhone 4S. It’s also hard to say how practical such a feature is – many may find the traditional 2D maps meet their needs, as is. But assuming users are really sold on 3D, the company may decide to break that off as an in-app upgrade in the future.
But at the end of the day, it may not be the 3D interface that’s the bigger sell here, but rather, the crowdsourcing. Following the acquisition of Waze by Google, there’s a renewed interest in what else crowdsourcing can do via a network of mobile devices. Weather is an obvious fit.
prominent “Report” button, which also allows you to add a photo, write a message, or share to Facebook or Twitter. In addition to helping make Minutely’s weather reports more accurate, these reports display on the app’s map interface, though they can optionally be turned off here if getting in the way of seeing the radar data and storms.

Localytics finds user retention numbers up on iOS, Android
Mobile apps analytics company Localytics has released the results of its latest study, measuring download and user retention rates across iOS and Android applications. The annual study follows app downloads from new users in Q3 of each year, and then tracks how many times those apps are launched on the same devices through March 15 of the following year.
User retention accounts for some of the biggest changes in data, as 34 percent of people use an app 11 of more times after downloading it. That figure is up 10 percent year over year. However, 22 percent of people continue to download and only use an app a single time, which is in line with the figures from last year.
According to the study, Android users are becoming increasingly loyal, catching up with iOS levels of user retention. Previously, only 23 percent of users returned to the same app 11 of more times, but now, that number is on par with iOS users, as 34 percent of users use apps 11 or more times after first installing them.
Localytics attributes this Android growth to the Nexus, Samsung’s Galaxy series and new HTC models of Android devices, which feature a more app-friendly experience for users. In addition, with Android’s continually strong market share, many developers have increased investment in Android development, simply giving users more options on their Android device(s) of choice.
While Android may be experiencing larger growth in user retention, a recent report by Kantar Worldpanel actually saw iOS gaining on Android, with sales increasing by 3.5 percent in the period of March to May 2013. Android device sales stayed relatively stable during the same period.
Localytics launched in 2009, in part to help app developers track how (and how often) their apps are used. The company secured $5.5 million in Series B funding last year, bringing its total raised to $8.75 million. Developers interested in learning more about Localytics are encouraged to visit the company’s website.

5 Free Antivirus Apps To Keep Your Android Smartphone Malware-Free
Recently, while on a conference call, Google CEO Larry Page revealed that over 1.5 million Android devices are being activated each day. While those numbers are really huge and impressive, there is another, unimpressive side to this too.
A recent Kaspersky Lab report found that 99.9 percent of all the new malware detected in the first quarter of 2013 has been designed to prey on Android phones. In total, 22,750 new modifications of malicious programs targeting mobile devices were detected this past quarter. The vulnerability of this popular platform is exactly why Android users must invest in some research and pick a good anti-virus application for their devices.
The Google Play store is full of such options. Below is a list of 5 popular anti-virus apps:

Google Chromecast Review: Hands-On With The $35 HDMI Streaming Dongle
Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has released the Chromecast, a small device that plugs into a user’s television set and streams online content from Netflix, YouTube and the Chrome Web browser, with more services reportedly on the way.
There are a lot of devices that promise the same services that Chromecast offers, and many have a lot more features, but Google’s offering has a couple of things going for it that others did not. The Chromecast fits into an HDMI port instead of cluttering up an entertainment console or TV stand, shipped with three free months of Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) service, and most importantly -- only costs $35. Unfortunately, Google discontinued the Chromecast’s Netflix offer after about 24 hours, citing “overwhelming demand”. Since the offer was canceled, the Chromecast does not seem to be losing steam -- it is sold out on Google Play, Amazon, Best Buy’s website and most of the company's retail stores in the U.S.
I ordered the Chromecast from BestBuy.com shortly before the Netflix offer was rescinded. Rather than request a free device for review from Google, I wanted to see just how difficult it was to get the Chromecast as a consumer. I also chose to go with the oft-maligned retailer because it offered RewardZone points, a free rewards program that add up to about $5 for every $250 spent. Since Amazon had sold out its Chromecast supply -- it's still out of stock as of this writing -- and the Google Play Store said it will take three to four weeks before shipping, I went to Best Buy's website to order the device. I am also a member of Amazon Prime, the online retailer's premium member service that offers free two-day shipping on many products.

Android 4.3's New 'Always-On' Wi-Fi Feature Buried in Settings
It might be a bit much to say that one of the new features packed into Android's 4.3 upgrade is controversial, but it's definitely one worth knowing a little bit more about. As those who have taken a spin around the Android 4.3 ROM have noticed, Google has made a change to devices' Wi-Fi settings in Android 4.3.
"To improve location accuracy and for other purposes, Google and other apps may scan for nearby networks, even when Wi-Fi is off," describes Google.
Android Police's Ron Amadeo notes that the move is actually probably designed to save one's battery life instead of wasting it, given that the only other way for one's smartphone to discern one's location is to kick on the battery-draining GPS. However, he also calls out Google's interesting use of language in its disclaimer – specifically, the "other purposes" bit.
"Those 'other purposes' probably (that means this is the speculation part) involves shipping that Wi-Fi location data back to Google, which is how the Wi-Fi location service currently functions. The only way to use Wi-Fi hotspots for location data is to build a map of SSID (hotspot name) locations. You do that by running around with a GPS and Wi-Fi chip and virtually stick Wi-Fi pins on a map," Amadeo writes.
To check and see whether your phone has this feature enabled by default (a number do not), you'll have to navigate through to the very bowels of your Android operating system's settings — Google doesn't exactly make this feature all that easy to flick on and off. Here's how:
Fire up the Settings app and tap your finger on the Wireless and Networks option. Tap on the Wi-Fi option, and then tap on the Overflow button on your phone's screen (the triple-dots icon). When this submenu pops up, tap your finger on the Advanced option. From there, you'll want to make sure to check the "Scanning always available" option if you want to participate in the new Android 4.3 feature. Otherwise, if it's checked, you need merely to uncheck it to ensure that "Wi-Fi off" really means "Wi-Fi off."
It's important to reiterate that numerous reports have come in from Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Galaxy Nexus owners – to name a few – who all indicate that this feature remains off by default when they've updated their devices to Android 4.3. Which is to say, it's more important that you know about this potentially useful setting than to freak out about it, but it's also worth checking this, and many of Android's other "Advanced" wireless configuration options, when you've upgraded your mobile OS!

BBM For Android Might Grab Bigger Market Share Than iPhone App, Find Out Why
Apparently, BlackBerry is already testing its BBM for iPhone and Android mobile applications, and based on leaks posted online, it is possible that the messaging service’s expansion to other platforms is near-ready ahead of the rumored September release date. Of course, the question remains, can BlackBerry generate bigger revenue than rivals WhatsApp or Line and bag the messaging market share lead? Based on multiple data provided by research firms and monthly active usage on both Android and iPhone, it is possible that BBM will bag the word “success” on Android than on iPhone despite the fact that apps available on Apple’s mobile operating system are capable of generating bigger revenue than on Android. The main reason why BBM for Android will be more successful than BBM for iPhone is the fact that Android doesn’t currently have a “standout” native messaging service.
Sorry Google, but the new Hangouts which replaced Google Talk is still far from perfect despite Google’s efforts. Google’s “Plus” messaging service also failed to beat Facebook’s instant messaging service mainly due to lower adoption rate and the lack of Google Plus market share that could produce more exchanges and engagement. On Android, BBM might take over and lure more customers, in fact, some research firms suggested that many Android users are former (or current) users of BlackBerry devices. It would be a safe bet that these current or old BlackBerry owners will use BBM for Android more often, with more engagement compared to iPhone users who are more loyal to Apple’s products and services.
Secondly, Apple is already offering a near-perfect messaging system, the iMessage. Unlike Google’s instant messaging service, iMessage is baked within the messaging service app of Cupertino’s mobile operating system which is a more intuitive structure than Google’s multiple messaging apps strategy. And on iOS, top third-party messaging apps also started making some bold moves to stop BBM’s plan to steal customers. WhatsApp recently switched from paid to free on first year model, similar to Android, while Line added more “stickers” to lure paying customers.
It’s still to early to tell if BBM for Android will add more BBM users than its iOS counterpart, but based on today’s market, it looks like BlackBerry will need additional effort to attract iOS users.

Microsoft Office for Android
When it comes to Android apps and what will be used and what really is just for fun. Well, Microsoft Office is mostly for work and school, and they have finally brought it to Android. They have had the iPhone app for a short time, and now they are bringing it to Android. I feel that this is in a bit late since there are so many other office apps that can do the same, and there is no need for other subscriptions.
Microsoft recently made a version of Office Mobile available free for iPhone owners who also subscribe to its cloud-based Office 365 service. Now it’s Android’s turn. On Wednesday, Microsoft extended a similar benefit to folks with Office 365 subscriptions and Android smartphones. The offering comes at no additional cost to those subscribers, but a typical Office 365 subscription runs $99.99 a year (and lets people use Office on up to 5 PCs and/or Macs).
As with the version for the iPhone, the mobile app is meant to complement Office on a personal computer so it’s more Office light than anything else. So, Android owners can access, view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on their smartphones or create Word and Excel docs, but not PowerPoint docs from scratch on those handsets. Outlook is not part of the deal.
The Android version can be downloaded from the Google Play Store, but the app itself is only available for Android phones, not tablets. If you have a tablet, Microsoft recommends you use Office Web Apps instead. Office 365 subscribers can employ Office Mobile for Android on up to 5 phones.
People who use the mobile app can access documents on Microsoft’s cloud-based SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro or the new soon to be name. It has obviously taken awhile for Office to come to Android, just as it took time to hit the iPhone, and even at that there are limits and restrictions (the Office 365 requirement). Microsoft customers with Windows Phones got first dibs at Office Mobile. In the interim, people with rival devices turned to third party apps such as QuickOffice or relied on the likes of online services such as Google Docs to help fill in the void.
For me, the other apps are better because you buy them once you can use them on multiple Android devices. I use OfficeSuite Pro it can connect Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, SugarSync, and SkyDrive. When you open a file and then save it updates it on that account, and then you can go to your Microsoft Office or other device when you have that cloud drive installed and find your file updated and ready to be edited on your desktop.
I always enjoy getting my apps when they’re on sale just because I like them, after trying them of course, okay in most cases, other cases because they are only on sale for a limited time, and I’m cheap. I always have to find those deals. I just wish that the office suites would enable dual screen, but I guess that’s why there is cut and paste.

Popular iOS photo app VSCO Cam lands on Android; you can beta test it
Good news, Android photographers! One of the most popular photo apps on Apple's rival iOS operating system will soon be coming to Android smartphones -- and if you're lucky, you can beta test it now. First released for the iPhone and iPad a little over a year ago, VSCO Cam combines a stylish, minimalist interface with a rich feature set including the ability to set the focus and metering points separately. You can also lock white balance, should you want.

The app name is a contraction of Visual Supply Co., a company also known for its film emulation tools for two desktop apps: Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom, and Apple's Aperture. As you might expect from a company with a history in image editing and effects, VSCO Cam also provides both. It further offers customizable image browsing, filtering, and geolocation tools, as well as tutorials from experienced photographers.
Initially, the Android version will only work with three phones: Samsung's Galaxy S III and S4, as well as HTC's One. (Not to be confused with the earlier One X and One X+.) The company is soliciting beta testers with any of these phones, or for that matter, with other devices.

Developers encouraged to build Glass apps with Android SDK
Google is encouraging developers to design and develop apps for its Google Glass wearable computing platform using the existing Android SDK.
Although the Android SDK doesn’t provide all the tools necessary to build apps fully optimised for Glass, it allows developer to try out ideas before the full Google Glass development kit arrives.
The company announced at its Google I/O developer conference that it is working on a Glass Development Kit that will allow developer to build software for Google Glass in the form of APKs (application package files).
Some of the features that will appear in the GDK are already supported by the Android SDK, including access to the accelerometer and the ability to play media.
Google has also written some APK samples, including a stopwatch, a level and a compass, with more due to be launched in the next few weeks. Once the GDK arrives, these samples will be updated to show the migration path between Android apps and a “full Glass experience”.
A blog post by the Glass Developer Relations team said developers’ backgrounds in using Android will allow them to get “a long way” in building apps for Glass.
Android beginners, meanwhile, are encouraged to learn about general development on the platform to prepare for the launch of the GDK.

Transit app arrives on Android as best Google Maps alternative
The Transit app has finally launched on Android. After blockbuster success on iOS, Transit has finally landed on Google Play, bringing with it the best UI we’ve seen for mass transit apps. Google Maps for Android includes mass transit directions, but Transit offers a prettier UI in my opinion as well as some other niceties subway riders will soon wonder how they ever did without.
Transit doesn’t cover as many places as Google, however, for the ones it does it offers a clean UI along with features like live updating arrival and departure times. Wondering where your bus is? Transit will live update your directions with the delayed arrival time, giving you perhaps a few extra minutes at the office or with friends.
But what if you’re a subway kind of guy, and enjoy waiting in streaming hot cesspool of humanity underground? Transit allows users to set preferences with which type of transit they prefer or to completely avoid with a few taps.
The iOS version of Transit included an offline mode, something the developer has not implemented into the Android version, but plans to shortly. Transit is free to download and use, and is available now on Google Play. The listing of all 43 supported mass transit systems are listed on the app’s Google Play page.
